Hardness Testing
Hardness testing is performed on critical areas of the roller to verify that the shaft material, heat-treated components, and surface-treated working areas meet the specified hardness requirements.
Testing Equipment
- Rockwell Hardness Tester (HRC)
- Vickers Hardness Tester (HV)
- Portable Leeb Hardness Tester for on-site or portable measurement
Testing Locations
- Roller Working Surface: Measurements at both ends and the middle section, particularly for verifying the hardness of hard-chrome-plated surfaces.
- Shaft Ends & Journals: Measurements on the base material to verify heat-treatment hardness.
Inspection Report
A hardness report can include the measured value at each inspection point, together with an indication of whether the result meets the requirements specified in the customer's drawing or technical specification.
Typical requirements may include:
- Heat-Treated Shaft: HB 220–250
- Hard Chrome Plating: HV ≥ 850
Actual acceptance criteria are determined according to the material, heat-treatment process, surface treatment, and customer requirements.
Traceability
Each hardness measurement is linked to the individual roller identification number, allowing inspection data and historical records to be retrieved when required for quality verification, maintenance, or future refurbishment.
